St. Luke Elementary School in Barrhaven is with the Ottawa Catholic School Board. They have roughly 450 students from kindergarten to grade 6.
STUDENTS HARD AT WORK IN THE CLASSROOM

January flew by at St Luke with students hard at work in class.
In Mme Lescarbeau’s grade 4 science group, students have been experimenting with pullies to see what will and wont work. It is all about exploring while learning something new.
In Cathy’s grade 1 class, students are learning about poetry. It is a great way to explore patterns, images, sound and more. The class has a poem book which the students are adding to frequently.
In many classes at St Luke, students are learning about algebra which is always a fun math unit. In Mrs. Logan’s grade 6 class, students are learning the difference between a constant and a variable. In Mars Agostini’s class, students worked together to solve math problems and find solutions.
In Ms Brynczka’s grade 3 class, students are learning about plants. They are going to find out what part of the plant brings water and nutrients to the leaves.
Miss Basta worked with her students to improve their coding skills. They used sphere and beetbots, and shared what they learned with their classmates.
LEARNING THE GOSPEL VALUE OF HOPE

As students at St Luke Elementary finished up their Advent season, they started 2020 on a positive note with learning the gospel value of hope. Any students which shows these traits are rewarded for their positivity and good deeds.
Mrs Logan’s grade six class brainstormed what they want to be when they are older. Many great ideas floated through the classroom including; becoming a philanthropist, neurologist, lawyer, or a nurse.
Meanwhile students in Erin Duncan’s class had fun with stamps — working on their word wall words. They focused on spelling, letter recognition, reading and fine motor skill activity.
To remember their time at St Luke, students in Mrs Agoslini’s class are learning how to use We Video. They are going to film some of their favourite memories from around the school and are hard at work compiling it all into a final video.
Mrs Sutherlands grade three class took advantage of the warmer weather we received last week and went outdoors for a scavenger hunt. They saw a rainbow and came back with many stories to share with their parents around the dinner table.
The kindergarten students are learning how to survey, asking their fellow classmates if they like the snow and if they have ever built a snowman. The popular vote was yes to both.
And on Tuesday, January 14, students in the school community had informative info sessions put on by Hydro Ottawa. They learned about closed and open circuits and how to stay safe around electricity. Important life skills which can help prevent them and their families from getting hurt.
STUDENTS TAKE PART IN SCHOOL CHRISTMAS CONCERT

As students at St Luke get ready for the Christmas break, they have been busy taking part in advent celebrations and practicing for their school Christmas concert.
On December 10, the school’s developmental education class spent the day at the mall, catching up with old friends, Christmas shopping, and even had the chance to visit with Santa Claus.
The school has also been busy preparing for Advent, lighting the second and third advent candle during assembly’s which the grade 3’s led. It is the last time they had the chance to come together to reflect before the Christmas break.
The Kindergarten class had a busy week working on Christmas crafts, and finding ways to free the gingerbread. They worked in teams to complete the task. The also had some fun while borrowing Santa’s sleigh and had a visit from the Grinch on December 16.
To celebrate coding week, Ms. Sutherlands grad 4/5 class coded their way into the weekend, practicing being computer scientists.
The grade 1’s created hand-made gift bags in Cathy Vachon’s class and were also hard at work practicing for their school Christmas show which was held on December 18. It was a great show which was enjoyed by parents, friends, teachers and students in the school community.
CELEBRATING ADVENT AT ST LUKE'S

Students at St Luke Elementary School have been hard at work getting into the Christmas spirit.
The month started off with the first week of Advent on December 2. Teacher Mrs Coxall said it was a great time to gather as a community to pray and reflect. Her grade 3 students read aloud during the school’s liturgy, anf their first Advent Ambassador shared his journal entry with the class.
Mrs. O’Callaghan and her class hosted their own special Advent celebration for their grade 1 class. The celebrations will continue every Monday until the end of the Advent season.
On the same day, students in Alfea Ellacott’s class noticed an elf on the shelf who will be looking over them this holiday season.
The start of December also meant reindeer games being played in the gym, using beads to spell Christmas words and festive sweater day. Many students went to school dressed in their festive sweaters which featured designs of Santa Claus, Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer.
In Mrs Agostini’s class, students are practicing their podcast for their digital storytelling assignment. The project focuses on Inuit Ancestral objects.
Grade 1 students in Gayle O’Callaghan's class are busy preparing for their Christmas concert which will be taking place on December 18.
Debbi Milne worked with the grade 3 class, where students spent the week getting technical building digital snowmen. They then used the app texthelp to help them describe it. She also worked with the grade sixes who used screencastify to capture student voice and describe their snowman in French.
