June 1st - Ottawa Fire Services 2020 WakeUp

Get a Working Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm! program is now virtual!

OTTAWA On June 1, 2020, Ottawa Fire Services is once again launching the ‘WakeUp!’ Get a working smoke and carbon monoxide alarm program, however this year it will be offered virtually, due to COVID-19. This is a one-week (June 1-7) social media campaign built on the importance of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, friendly competition, and a sense of community where Fire Chief Kim Ayotte will challenge others online to test their smoke and CO alarms,

Since 2005 firefighters have knocked on doors for ‘WakeUp!’ to check for working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in Ottawa. Starting June 1st Fire Chief Ayotte will be challenging the Mayor, Councilors, City Staff, Fire Service personnel, Media Personalities and City residents to test their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. We are asking all residents and visitors to retweet/repost pics or videos of them testing their smoke and CO alarms on twitter @OttFirePrevent.

Chief Ayotte states “Working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms give you an early warning so you can use your home escape plan and exit your home safely”. Residents are spending more time at home during this pandemic and it is crucial that smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working. Tragically, there have been 7 fatalities due to fire in the home so far this year in Ottawa. Let’s not have any more!
