Message from Ottawa Fire Services Media Relations:
District 4 – Station 44 – Ward 3 – Barrhaven
Ottawa Fire Services received a 911 call 9:03pm reporting a fire in a Barrhaven townhouse at 6 Spring Grove Lane. The caller advised there were two people were still in the unit and had been trapped by the fire. Firefighters arrived on location at 9:08pm encountered smoke coming from the roof and eaves of the structure. Firefighters entered the home and rescued one occupant, the second occupant was located outside thanks to a neighbour who had entered the burning structure to rescue them prior to our arrival. Firefighters declared a second alarm at 9:10pm summoning additional resources and took all 3 people into the warmth of a nearby home to provide initial care before transferring them to the care of the Ottawa Paramedic Service.
Firefighters extinguished the main body of the fire in the family room of the townhouse and continued searching to ensure there were no other occupants in the home. Crews entered the adjoining homes to ensure the fire had not spread into neighbouring units, the damage was mostly contained to the original unit. Firefighters removed sections of the drywall in order to ensure the fire in the structure of the walls was completely extinguished before declaring the fire under control at 9:44pm. Firefighters remain on location to ensure the fire has not extended further and to ventilate the remaining smoke. An Ottawa Fire Services Investigator is on location to investigate the origins and cause of the fire.
